A beautifully detailed map of Cambridgeshire, England, was produced for Blaeu's monumental Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (subsequently published in the Atlas Maior),
circa 1645–1650
The map is celebrated for its exquisite decorative elements, which epitomize the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography:
- University Heraldry: Flanking the left and right margins are two elegant vertical columns featuring the distinctive coats of arms and shields representing the colleges of Cambridge University.
- Royal & Regional Insignia: The upper left section displays the royal arms of England, while the upper right features the arms of regional nobility.
- Cartographic Detail: The geography emphasizes towns, rivers, and the unique layout of "The Isle of Ely," detailed with tiny pictorial representations of villages, churches, and woodlands.
- Artistic Accents: A decorative title cartouche sits at the top center, flanked by allegorical figures, while a miles scale is located at the bottom right.
