Betty Sabo (1928–2016)

Betty Jean Sabo was an acclaimed American landscape painter and sculptor, widely celebrated as one of New Mexico’s premier 20th-century artists. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, she studied art at the University of New Mexico in the late 1940s before spending five years training under artist Carl von Hassler.

Sabo became renowned for her realistic, luminous oil paintings depicting the sweeping landscapes, adobe architecture, and rich natural light of New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Her meticulous painting process involved capturing field sketches, photos, and notes on location before executing finished compositions in her studio.

Her artwork achieved widespread recognition throughout her career. In 1988, a Sabo painting was selected as an official gift presented to U.S. President Ronald Reagan, and in 1992, one of her paintings was exhibited at the American Embassy in Moscow. Later in her career, she transitioned into bronze sculpting, creating prominent public commissions such as "Julia Resting" for the Albuquerque Museum.

Because Sabo shifted her primary focus to sculpture later in life, her original oil paintings are relatively rare on the market and remain highly sought after by fine art collectors.
